When people hear the 1920’s, many automatically think about the â€Å"Jazz Age.† They think about jazz music, movies, and new dances, but what people don t realize, is that the 1920’s was not always the non-stop party and drinking days for everyone. Many families and individuals faced the struggles of abject poverty and working conditions, the fear of the Ku Klux Klan, and women wanting women s rights and individualism. The author of my novel had to experience some of these struggles first hand. Born in Shtetl, Russian Poland, Anzia Yezierska immigrated to America in 1890 at eight years old with her poor family consisting of eight siblings and parents. She grew up in New York s lower east side under her Talmudic Scholar of a father rules. At age 17 she left home without her father s permission to become her own person. She went on to get an education and go to a university while working in sweatshops and laundries.
